How do I transfer files to my webspace?

This tutorial will cover how to upload pictures into your web space with Windows built-in FTP (File Transfer Protocol) utility. An FTP program is used to move a file from your computer to our server.

The easiest way to share pictures with others is to put them into web space available for anyone to view. This is easiest because once you upload a picture to the web, people can go visit it as many times as they wish without you needing to e-mail it again and again. It is much easier to just send the web address of a picture via email than it is to send the actual picture in email. This will make getting pictures to friends and family easier than ever!

Sierra Advantage provides all user accounts with up to 10 MB of web space to host pictures, web pages or any other kind of file. The free space for your username is located at http://www.directcon.net/username, where "username" is the beginning of your primary directcon.net email address.

1. Open any Windows folder, and type "ftp.directcon.net" into the address field.

2. Press the "Enter" key, and you should be taken to Sierra Advantage's default FTP directory.

3. Left-click the "File" menu on the top-left of your window, and select "Login As..."

4. When the "Login As" window pops up, enter your primary username, and password, select the "Save Password" checbox toward the bottom of the small window, then click the "Login" button. You will then be taken to your user folder on our server. Move this window to one side of your monitor by dragging it from the top of the window.

5. Open the folder that contains the pictures or other files you would like to upload to the server. You can then drag the file/s you want uploaded to the server, to the other window you had open for our server.

6. The file/s will be copied to our server.

7. You can view your user space by typing in your user space address "http://www.directcon.net/username/"

8. You can click the file on the server, or let people know where your file has been uploaded (example. http://www.directcon.net/username/examplefile.txt).

Congratulations! You have uploaded a file. It is now possible for anyone to go see this this by typing in the web address to it within their browser. You can include this link in an e-mail and thus allow your recipient to just click it to get to the picture.
